"honouring our fight for freedom" - too much cliche
letter to editor of DomPost regarding ANZAC Day headline - the mythology embodied in it has become more of a 'lie' 100 years after WW1.

The Dom Post headline, “honouring our fight for freedom”, contains too much cliché to be helpful. WWI was not about freedom or independence; it was about empire. The NZ government of the day (Reform Party, William Massey PM) sought to become an ‘equal partner’ in the British Empire not gain an appropriate independence here in the South Pacific.
To still base the remembrances on this mythology after a century now is increasingly making them seem like a lie. There are other ways to remember that loss of life. We are reluctant to dump the old exploitation mentality embodied in empire, making it harder for us to adopt the fundamental change necessary for a sustainable future.
