VARC has facilities holding beagle dogs for use in scientific research in the Manawatu and Hawkes Bay regions.

Come join the Compassionate Steps Walk for the animals across Napier town centre (in the Hawkes Bay). The walk serves to highlight our positive relationship with animals and to demonstrate our opposition to animals being used for animal experiments, in particular, the beagles and other companion animals being bred and used for research at a facility in the Hawkes Bay area.

Animal lovers and their families, including the family pooch, are encouraged to join in on the walk. Guest speaker Green MP Sue Kedgley will speak of the secrecy of animal research in New Zealand. SAFE has called on the Minister responsible for animal welfare to place an immediate moratorium on all current beagle research and is demanding a ban on the use of companion animals for research purposes.
Join the walk against animal experiments. Pencil it into your diaries now.

STARTS 1pm, Saturday, 19 April 2008 at the Soundshell, Marine Parade, Napier. See you there!

After the walk come enjoy a free outdoor concert. For details visit: safe.org.nz/SAFE-events/Free-concert-and-walk-for-the-animals/

SAVE THE BEAGLES CAMPAIGN PUBLIC MEETING, SUNDAY 20th APRIL, NAPIER

We will also show a short film about the VARC beagles and the campaigns which have been working to draw attention to their plight.

Vegan cake, tea and coffee will be served and there will be informations stalls on site.

Re: WALK FOR THE ANIMALS - 1PM, SATURDAY 19 APRIL, NAPIER

I wonder how SAFE is going to pay all their staff with the minium wage now being $12 per hour and contributing 1% to Kiwisaver? Will staff be laid off, their paid work hours be reduced or told not to be a part of Kiwisaver? Maybe more money will be spent on wages instead of campaiging for our animal chums? No doubt the unitarist despot that runs SAFE isn't happy about paying staff more money. If the despot isn't happy about paying employees more cash and the above situations happen then the staff have to form a union to address the imbalance of power!

Re: WALK FOR THE ANIMALS - 1PM, SATURDAY 19 APRIL, NAPIER

Unions work!!!

Re: WALK FOR THE ANIMALS - 1PM, SATURDAY 19 APRIL, NAPIER

I wouldn't worry about Safe since it's a well known fiefdom that's only there to keep a few in power and money. It also well known to just do the token gesture to save the animals from exploitation.

Re: WALK FOR THE ANIMALS - 1PM, SATURDAY 19 APRIL, NAPIER

Who cares about SAFE? It is a pointless group that has a nutta in charge of it.

Direct action is the only way to go as it works!!

Re: WALK FOR THE ANIMALS - 1PM, SATURDAY 19 APRIL, NAPIER

Wow this is an article about a campaign to raise awareness, not an invitation for pious wankers to bad-mouth SAFE. Should we not all be working together for the animals, regardless of personal beliefs re "fiefdoms" and "power and money" *snort* what power and money? It's disappointing to me to see that the so-called "animal rights movement" is as full of bitching and back-biting and elitism (oooh Direct Action, you must be a big tough open rescuer).

Re: WALK FOR THE ANIMALS - 1PM, SATURDAY 19 APRIL, NAPIER

wow do ppl continue to reply to this troll who everytime there is anything AR pops up ,it is the same person and a real loser ,btw NZ has a rich history of DA in the name of Animal Lib ,not just open rescue

Re: WALK FOR THE ANIMALS - 1PM, SATURDAY 19 APRIL, NAPIER

Safe is the main contributor to the animal rights wank.

Re: WALK FOR THE ANIMALS - 1PM, SATURDAY 19 APRIL, NAPIER

Calling anybody or a group of people losers/trolls just because you don’t agree with them only shows how closed minded you are.

Re: WALK FOR THE ANIMALS - 1PM, SATURDAY 19 APRIL, NAPIER

Gee, with name calling and insults isn’t it any wonder the AR movement has a sorry reputation.

Re: WALK FOR THE ANIMALS - 1PM, SATURDAY 19 APRIL, NAPIER

Having a concert to make people feel good won't raise awareness for the animal rights cause since most individuals will turn up for the fun and then go home to eat meat and to drink cows' milk with their coffee or tea, while wearing woollen or leather footware.

Safe is only involved to raise awareness about its own bank account in order to pay for some's KiwiSaver and wages since I'm sure Safe will have a stall there looking for money.

Direct action is the only way to go as it works!!

Re: WALK FOR THE ANIMALS - 1PM, SATURDAY 19 APRIL, NAPIER

Direct action is the best thing to do because animals are liberated and awareness is raised at the same time. All what this poxy concert will do is to give people warm fuzzys while our animal chums are still been kept in chains and contained to be killed for the mindless masses consumption. If SAFE were really concerned about the beagles they would rescue them from the abuse not just do promotional stunts.

By the way I don’t think calling anyone wankers, trolls and/or losers is in line with the compassion and respect principles veganism/animal rights is suppose to encourage.

Re: WALK FOR THE ANIMALS - 1PM, SATURDAY 19 APRIL, NAPIER

If SAFE simply just rescued the current beagles incarcerated inside VARC, all that would happen would be more beagles bred up and placed into VARC labs to replace the ones taken.

Raising awareness and public education (in conjunction with direct action)will lead to more permanent change.

People get too focused on sole tactics.

I'm a believer in direct action ie rescuing animals from factory farms, labs etc as much as I am about public education thru means like the above.

These tactics should go hand in hand.

And how do you think Allen Goldenthal and his family is going to feel about these events being held in his home town?

Mighty uncomfortable I'd imagine.

Re: WALK FOR THE ANIMALS - 1PM, SATURDAY 19 APRIL, NAPIER

Nah, direct action is better than holding a concert. Just making people feel uncomfortable isn't good enough since animals are still been abused. These types of events have been happening for the last thirty to forty years and it hasn't lead to a permanent change because animals are still experimented upon while others are been killed for their meat, fur and leather. This event is really about raising the awareness of Safe, so its bank balance looks better.

Re: WALK FOR THE ANIMALS - 1PM, SATURDAY 19 APRIL, NAPIER

If SAFE are so good at education then why do a number of former employees work for an educational institute that train people for the meat industry?

Re: WALK FOR THE ANIMALS - 1PM, SATURDAY 19 APRIL, NAPIER

It’s most disappointing to see Safe willing to sacrifice animals again for its own purpose. If these so-called animal rights activists were serious about saving the beagles they would do it by direct action. Not by holding a publicity stunt to make some feel uncomfortable while making others joyous. Many believe Safe won’t be more proactive in saving our animal chums from exploitation for business reasons i.e. they don’t want to have the public off side since it will affect their income from subscriptions, donations and wage subsidies from the govt. Also, many feel this so-called animal rights group is been held hostage by management that practices nepotism and a potty director. See www.indymedia.org.nz/feature/display/71693/index.php for proof since they call Safe’s base city full of odium.

It’s because of their misguided attitude towards our animal buddies and its unethical management that Safe isn’t well respected by most. Manly because public education hasn’t worked after decades of it or why do our animal friends continue to be slaughtered, abused & eaten by most of the public?

Re: WALK FOR THE ANIMALS - 1PM, SATURDAY 19 APRIL, NAPIER

it is the animals that are the biggest losers by this inaction

Re: WALK FOR THE ANIMALS - 1PM, SATURDAY 19 APRIL, NAPIER

I would like to hear a reply from the organisation i donated to, to see what difference we have made so far to saving the beagles.

i would also like to know more about what can be done to save them, because it seems really weird that this kind of abuse is happening in NZ . it seems like a Jamie oliver, please save the animal campaign. ;-)
