Picket at (in)Corrections: Justice for Trans Women in Prisons
No Pride in Prisons is holding a picket outside the Department of Corrections Northern Regional office on 22nd Apr (Auckland). No Pride In Prisons' Wellington is holding a picket outside Corrections Office, 44-52 The Terrace on Fri the 22nd Apr.
We have recently been in contact with a trans woman who alleges she was raped by prison officers at Whanganui prison on two occasions. Following a “Call-in to Call Out Corrections,” where hundreds of people from across the world wrote emails, letters, and called the Department of Corrections demanding justice for this woman, Corrections has continued to do nothing. Corrections has deliberately chosen not to keep this woman’s advocates at No Pride in Prisons informed about her case. It has done nothing to address her very serious safety concerns, and has ignored No Pride in Prisons’ attempts to make contact on her behalf.
No Pride in Prisons is holding the picket to make it clear that the Department can no longer ignore this woman’s safety.
Join us to send a clear message to the Department of Corrections that prison rape is never acceptable and that it must hold its staff accountable to these serious allegations.
