NO MORE POLICE BRUTALITY: Rally Against Racist Police Violence
Nikau Andrews was handcuffed when three cops held him down so another cop could knee him in the head. His crime? Spraypainting a wall and being Māori. He never fought back, and he was not charged with assault. The police beat Nikau so badly he needed to be hospitalised, and they did it because Nikau is Māori.
Nikau is only the latest person in a long chain of Māori who have been beaten and abused by the police. Māori are almost 8x more likely than Pākehā to be beaten, mauled by an attack dog, electrocuted, or pepper sprayed by the police. Māori make up the majority of those shot and killed by police.
Racist police violence against Māori has to stop, and all of us have to work together to stop it.
We demand of the Police Commissioner: fire the racist cops who attacked Nikau Andrews.
We demand of the Minister of Police: ban cops from initiating violence, and ban cops from using the wrestling hold that ruptured Nikau’s sternum.
SATURDAY 11th JULY. MIDDAY. COLLEGE HILL ROAD. OPPOSITE POLICE HQ.
