Emergency demonstration in support of refugees on Manus
4pm - 6pm outside the Australian High Commission, 72-76 Hobson St, Thorndon, Wellington
Australia has been refusing to accept refugees fleeing for safety by boat - they housed them in detention centres on Manus and Nauru. Now they've closed the Manus centre and left the people there with no food, water, power and medical care.
The people in the detention centre are now being threatened with being forcibly moved by the PNG army to incomplete accommodation in a nearby town. Locals of the town were not consulted about the move of c. 600 people into their community and some are understandably unhappy about it. The refugees are also unhappy, they do not want to move to another prison – they want freedom.
These refugees and asylum seekers should be urgently evacuated and resettled somewhere where seeking asylum is acknowledged as a basic right and they will be allowed residency.
Here in Aotearoa we open our arms to them and demand that our government urgently #BringThemHere #RefugeesWelcome #Manus
