No Apologies: Expressive Drawing Workshop with Sian Torrington

Sat December 2, 1pm-3.30pm
Thistle Hall, 293 Cuba St
If you love to draw, here is a great opportunity. Join Sian Torrington and the Wellington HELP Foundation for a very special creative and embodied workshop in response to the #metoo campaign!

2.5 hours of community, and connection through active drawing together. We will make large scale charcoal drawings together in which all marks on the paper are welcome, acceptable and appreciated. No prior drawing experience needed to take part. We will have fun, move, learn and share. And at the end we will all take home a piece of our charcoal drawing.

Drawing for me has always been a way to make the internal external – to track ways of thinking and feeling, to figure things out. In this class we will create this space, and celebrate all of who we are.

In the studio, my body can be hot, alive, active. It can be a place that feels good, or bad, and both are allowed to be on the page. The marks on the page reflect the movement of this body. Tired, excited, tentative. All are ok, all have a place. All marks are a record of this body existing and finding itself.

The Materials
Charcoal on paper, one of the most simple, flexible, and ancient drawing materials we have.

The Tutor
Sian Torrington is an active feminist, with a belief in revolution through creativity and expression. She has been drawing for well over a decade, and is currently interested in the place where abstraction and figurative drawing meets, to represent the embodied, living subject. She has taught at COCA for the last seven years, exhibited nationally and internationally, and works from a studio in Wellington.

The Environment
A supportive and safe place where participants can experience expressive collaborative drawing, community, and connection. This will be a large scale drawing experience, with up to 40 participants. We will work as a large group, and also in smaller groups together. The workshops will involve a small amount of talking, including introducing yourself to the group, responding with a word to draw from, and a wrap up reflection at the end. We will mostly be drawing, and will take a break in the middle of the session for refreshments. We will work standing up, and sitting at tables.

The Cost
$40 per person. Register at
