Nakba Day 2017

There were protests and rallies around the world to mark Nakba Day - 15th May. Here Palestinian flags appeared around Wellington, including outside the Israeli embassy, parliament and MFAT.

This year was the 69th anniversary of al Nakba, the 'day of catastrophe'. It is the anniversary of the Israel being declared a state.

The 'Independence of Israel' was signed on 15th May 1948 after nearly six months of civil war (known to Palestinians as 'al-Nakba' and Israelis as the 'War of Independence'. During those six months more than 750,000 Palestinians were forced to leave their homes and become refugees. All these years later, people are still planning to return.

As Palestinian poet Remi Kanazi says,
'We will return. That is not a threat, a wish, a hope, or a dream, but a promise'.
