Medical Marijuana - Is It Really Therapeutic?
When a person smokes a joint, he usually feels its effect within minutes. The immediate sensations—increased heart rate, lessened coordination and balance, and a “dreamy,” unreal state of mind—peak within the first 30 minutes. These short-term effects usually wear off in two to three hours, but they could last longer, depending on how much the user takes, the potency of THC and the presence of other drugs added into the mix.
As the typical user inhales more smoke and holds it longer than he would with a cigarette, a joint creates a severe impact on one’s lungs. Aside from the discomfort that goes with sore throats and chest colds, it has been found that consuming one joint gives as much exposure to cancer-producing chemicals as smoking five cigarettes.
International Statistics
According to the US Drug Enforcement Administration, a large percentage of those arrested for crimes test positive for marijuana. Nationwide, 40% of adult males tested positive at the time of their arrest.
Of adults 26 or older who used marijuana before age 15, 62% went on to use cocaine at some point in their lives; 9% went on to use heroin at least once; and 54% made some nonmedical use of mind-altering prescription drugs.
Next to alcohol, marijuana is the second most frequently found substance in the bodies of drivers involved in fatal automobile accidents.
The mental consequences of marijuana use are equally severe. Marijuana smokers have poorer memories and mental aptitude than do non-users.  Studies in Australia in 2008 linked years of heavy marijuana use to brain abnormalities. This is backed up by earlier research on the long-term effects of marijuana, which indicate changes in the brain similar to those caused by long-term abuse of other major drugs. And a number of studies have shown a connection between continued marijuana use and psychosis.
Cannabis is one of the few drugs which causes abnormal cell division which leads to severe hereditary defects. A pregnant woman who regularly smokes marijuana or hashish may give birth prematurely to an undersized, underweight baby. Over the last ten years, many children of marijuana users have been born with reduced initiative and lessened abilities to concentrate and pursue life goals.

And for the person with a drug problem, there are real solutions to addiction.  Narconon, a drug rehabilitation program that utilizes the methods of L. Ron Hubbard, has a success rate of more than 75% (

Commenting has now closed on this article.

These are rubbish claims, their "evidence" gathered by cherry-picking from biased or outdated studies, or by misrepresenting the findings of more credible studies. They are exactly the sort of claims the NZ Police, privatized drug cops companies (like Mike Sabin's MethCon, and the NZDDA), and corporate media pundits like Tom Scott and Rosemarie McLeod like to make.

In the context of this article this is no surprise, since it is thinly-veiled advertizing for Scientology., as you can see at the bottom; "Narconon, a drug rehabilitation program that utilizes the methods of L. Ron Hubbard". Hubbard of course was the founder of Scientology, and "Narconon" is well-know source of new recruits to the brain-washing cult.

What really bothers me is that the cops, private drug detectives, media columnists, and scientologists are all singing from the same songbook about cannabis. What does that tell us? (Shudder)

This article is not even cherry picking .. it is downright lies by those that benefit from its illegality, e.g. police for the easy pickings, the pharmaceutical trade with their deadly lethal legal hard drugs, and dare I even mention those NGO,s whose survival depends on the demonisation of Cannabis.

For anyone who is beyond the knee jerk, and really wanted to know the truth there are now many scores of peer reviewed white papers on the beneficial medical effects, and especially for the elderly and the permanently stricken.

Tell me some more horror stories about the misuse of cannabis and people becoming cabbage like .. if you abuse anything from water to pizza there is a price to be paid .. look at the hypocrisy .. ASH supported by taxpayers money and yet these hypocrites jump into a car and release 600 cubic litres of cancer causing gas for every litre of fuel burnt .. and it goes on and on !

It always boils down to follow the money (Cui Bono) the sheer cost of enforcement is a serious drain on the nations coffers .. the facts and the figures from other nations with more liberal laws do not support our draconian and untruthful approach .. make cannabis legal and outlaw the real culprit .. Alcohol!
