Is this the final and definite fall of capitalism?

Many thousands of defrauders were caught at one go, Panama Papers. Identical frauds have ben committed massively at least since 1945. Crime is inherent to capitalism. As these acts are evil, there is need to eradicate the system, build a better one.

Is this the final and definite fall of capitalism?

Fernando García Izquierdo

It has been said that the so-called Panama Papers have set a new standard in the matter of disclosures of crimes of a financial nature. So many of them have just been discovered! “Epic developments”, says ‘Time’ magazine, and the word “quantity” is repeatedly pronounced and with great emphasis. The faults committed having come to light practically all at the same time, the media is now talking of them with admiration.

In any case, personally I wouldn’t have used the word “epic” to describe these doings. EVIL developments is what I would have said. Moreover, I would have used the term thus: this system is inherently evil, the capitalist system sometimes called the free world.

The newspapers and other media, however, are quite correct. These are “massively consequential leaks”, as it is only natural in our world of concentration of power, globalised misery and exploitation. You achieve massively important things or you are thrown into the dustbin. A great deal of work, massive abuse of the workers, astronomical robbery, innovation, ultimate discoveries, whatever. As for me, just counting the number of speculators and other brigands entered in the list makes my dizzy. So many thousands now caught with their fingers in the pie. As they say, never before seen or imagined.

Not unnaturally, the event is described in the media as “a fantastically big cache”, the most colourful secret files, the names of dark-eyed sheiks and other PEOPLE, all out of the files of an international law-and-finance firm in Panama. Secrets coming out of the most recondite records of said firm. A perfectly legal joint, constituted under our elaborated advanced capitalist laws, rules and regulations. All these firms (for there are many) have been constituted in order to help the rich to get richer. There are many ways to get rich, richer, fantastically rich at times. The method is robbing, speculating, exploiting the workers, playing with numbers, evading due payments. In political economy this is said to be maximising your profits. Accumulating, gobbling figures in your counting house: in our calamitous times you only open your mouth and swallow; at the other end of the chain are “los pobres de la tierra”, lacking just about everything, little by little being set apart and dying.
There is an infinite number of these law-and-finance joints, and this should be (in my opinion) what the media had better emphasise. Here is quantity for you!

The name of the present one is Mossack Fonseca, which (itself) has offices or branches all around the world.

I believe that the “cache” first came to light on April 3, 2016, and it is said that this excellent work of unmasking the hidden holders of thousands of packets of gold or (if you prefer) thousand of baskets of very dirty linen, was performed by a consortium of investigating (or investigative) journalists working together, it is said, for a number of years. The investigation included (I have read) “financial records, passports and correspondence stretching back forty years.”

That is to say, we now have the palpable evidence of these people’s dishonest behaviour and great hypocrisy (I mean the people caught with their fingers in the pie.) The proof of the pudding, I should say. Oh scoundrels, rascals, oh big liars!

Two things I would like to point out, before going any further in this matter. One refers to my own manner of writing: I have used in the preceding paragraph the word “crime” which many might find excessive. I have used the term, actually, for want of a better word. In my mother tongue I would have said ‘delitos’, for in Spain the words ‘crimen’ and ‘criminal’ convey the idea of furious aggression, destruction of property and blood. This sort of “crime” is obviously not what I have in mind. People who are (openly or secretly) cheating others and carrying out obscure actions, deceitful movements to maximise profits (maximise results, as it is also said) are not necessarily assassins. Therefore, in my mind, as I say, these scoundrels do not commit murder, they have simply been found with their fingers in a large mass or dough, and they look very much like the rest of us. Moreover, at present, they are only “alleged” to have committed “something”.

Secondly, awful deeds and the names of the authors have been abundantly supplied this time to the public, enough to get drunk with “overinformation”. For instance, the American magazine “Time” said, on April 18, that the investigative journalists came out “detailing 214,000 offshore shell companies in two hundred countries.” One gets dizzy. I have no time to count so many “entries”. I leave it, which is perhaps what is being sought by the scoundrels. For personally I am one of those belonging to the old school, very old indeed, and I get uneasy flying so very high at times, typical of what the French call “la civilisation numérique”.

Presented with gallery of portraits and names. What is there in a name? Or in introducing quantity instead of quality, as ‘Time’ states, what is there in fifty names! one thousand, two or ten thousands! So therefore, I will not myself become an investigative person, looking for names and figures.

PEOPLE?! When I learned that the Honourable David Cameron has been placed in the list, I wondered whether my ears and eyesight had failed me. The prime minister of a great empire! Britannia Rules the Waves. To be an alleged defrauder. When later on I learn there had been a disclaimer (“It wasn’t Me, it was my Daddy…”) I sighed with relief.

And then Vladimir Putin also appeared in the list, vicariously, but there it is, PUTIN, because he has or has had friendly relations with alleged defrauders. The president of Communist China has also fallen into the trap, due to the fact that one of his wife’s brothers or one of his sister’s husband (I am not sure which), has turned out to be an alleged defrauder. And also the Saudi Arabia’s king who has been advised, as all his predecessors by British and American lawyers, the best advisers (allegedly) in the matter of overcoming a law full of loopholes.

But let us now turn from “the disclosures” to the essence of facts under consideration. This being “a decade marked by massively consequential leaks” (‘Time’ magazine), let’s also have a decade of the massively consequential study of our imperialist madness. The state in which we all are falling or, rather, have already fallen. Destruction of the earth and Death of the human race. That is the problem we are facing.

I cannot forget, of course, nor overlook that this “biggest cache ever” is the result of good work effected by courageous, honest investigating journalists. The American magazine “Time” has become very interested in this the GIGANTISM of the disclosures, more than in the crime, and has gone on, philosophically, to tell us that “quantity has a quality of its own.” We are told that the NUMBER of defrauders is the THING, the particular fact to be emphasised by our capitalistic media.
Not at all. The QUALITY of the crime is. The fact that now a million or even a billion crimes (due to the advancement of civilisation) can be traced being committed at one go, is not to be forgotten, or belittled; it is the “accident”, the “essence” is the need to eradicate the evil.
‘Time’ magazine writes about the QUANTITY. Many crimes committed at the same time must cause abomination in the mind of an honest person.
It has been said, and repeated in the media that many other “Mossack Fonsecas” exist throughout the world. Still worse, hundreds of similar joints have existed everywhere in our world since the end of World War two.
The very law has been made to facilitate these crimes. Thousand of laws have been enacted for the purpose. Or if they have the avowed purpose of facilitating trade, banking, credit or whatever the law (said laws) are full of loopholes to facilitate crime and give mountains of money to very intelligent lawyers.

During the supposed fight against fascism (July 1936 to June 1945) our cleverer people, Churchill, Attlee, Truman, Keynes and others worked intensively to preserve and intensify exploitation of man by man, to impose capitalist rule over the universe. It can be seen reading history. We only need to read about the Teheran Conference (1943), the Bretton Woods Conferences (1944), The Yalta and Potsdam Conference (1945).

And, still worse, capitalism was born some two and a half centuries ago, and at once the rich made the working classes know that they and only they were to rule society, the state and own the world. Their aim has been attained. A step forward was taken when the system changed into capitalism-imperialism. This happened in the nineteenth century. It was confirmed at international law in the Berlin Conference (1892.)

Capitalism is intrinsically evil. Today’s dominating bandits use the word REFORM (instead of exploitation) to cheat the workers, to make the people swallow the lie. It has always been so.The system cannot be reformed. It has to be eradicated.

Now, begging the readers pardon from what (in the following pages) may appear to be a dose of pretentiousness on my part. I give you hereunder the text of an article which I wrote (in English) in the beginning of 1970. I sent it to weeklies, dailies around the United Kingdom. It was not accepted. However, as you will see, it is simply a real life little story of the isle of Jersey at the time. I lived in the island with my family. I was a lawyer there.

On the occasion of a journey to Paris, I paid a visit to Jacques Fauvet, a well-known French intelectual and journalist. We interchanged some letters. He published my article in ‘Le Monde’, in 1970.
