A national dialog is "chit chat" to Chris Finlayson.
Letter to editor Dominion Post - National's use of urgency and Finlayson's 'chit chat' comment

Commentators and cartoonists have been observing the carelessness and arrogance the Prime Minister and others in the National government have been showing since their triumphant election. This arrogance has actually been evident ever since first elected with their frequent use of ‘urgency’ to push through legislation which actually demanded thorough national dialog. This SIS legislation just passed is only the latest example of that, but Chris Finlayson’s recent “chit chat” comment describing such a national dialog leaves no doubt of their desire to expose their disdain for democracy.
The shallowness of National’s attitude was just this week illustrated with the Prime Minister’s rush to link the legislation to the Sydney hostage taker without having in depth knowledge of that situation.
As such it is disappointing that the Labour caucus has given its support to National’s latest ‘urgent’ move. The three items of the SIS bill which National allowed Labour to influence will not be as important in the longer term as would have been a show of resolve in opposing National’s attack on democracy. Not a good start for the new Labour leader.
