A climate message from a 14 year old GetUp member

People often assume kids my age aren't interested in politics. They think we're totally oblivious to what is happening around us. But they could not be more wrong. Kids my age are worried about climate change. The Government is destroying our future.

Watch Jean on a video.

My name is Jean, I'm 14 years old and I'm a GetUp member from Birchgrove.

My favourite subjects are history and drama. Outside of school I love acting and soccer and I'm even going to be on a TV show on the ABC!

But recently I haven't been able to enjoy those things like I used to, because I can't shake the feeling that there are bigger things I should be worrying about.

People often assume kids my age aren't interested in politics. They think we're totally oblivious to what is happening around us.

But they could not be more wrong.

Kids my age are worried about climate change.

We're worried because the Government is destroying our future right before our eyes and by the time we get into power, it will be too late to save our planet.

So instead of feeling powerless, I'm taking action!

On November 30, I'm walking out of school, alongside thousands of other kids from around Australia. We're striking because we want the Government to recognise that a safe climate and future is just as important as a good education. Will you join us?

I'm helping organise this strike to tell politicians that this is a climate crisis. That the kids of today will not accept inaction and we will not sit quietly by while you destroy our future.

But we can't send this message without your help.

For the media and politicians to take notice, we need make this strike huge. Let's flood the streets outside our local Parliaments and demand our Government take our future's seriously.

So if you, your kids or even your grandkids want to join us, we'll be striking in every major city on November 30.

RSVP to a School Strike!

Adelaide: Nov 30, Albury Wodonga: Nov 29, Ballarat: Nov 30, Bega: Nov 30, Brisbane: Nov 30, Bundaberg: Nov 29, Byron Bay: Nov 30, Cairns: Nov 30, Canberra: Nov 28, Coffs Harbour: Nov 30, Cygnet: Nov 29, Darwin: Nov 30, Gold Coast: Nov 30, Grafton: Nov 30, Hobart: Nov 29, Illawarra: Nov 30, Inverell: Nov 30, Lismore: Nov 30, Maitland: Nov 30, Melbourne: Nov 30, Newcastle: Nov 30, Perth: Nov 30, Port Macquarie: Nov 30, Sydney: Nov 30, Townsville: Nov 30, Whitsundays: Nov 30.

I love riding my bike and going to the beach, and I'm not quite ready to say goodbye to those things. I want a future where I can appreciate all of the incredible things nature has to offer – including the Great Barrier Reef!

Politicians need to put their selfish egos aside and do their jobs. Because if they don't, we're the ones who will suffer.

I'm striking because we need to give this world the love it deserves. I hope you can join me.

GetUp is under attack by the government.

In a recent hysterical speech in the Senate Tasmanian German-born Senator Eric Abetz spoke about about protecting the "delicate flower" of democracy from the "sinister" forces at GetUp.

GetUp is an independent, not-for-profit community campaigning group. We use new technology to empower Australians to have their say on important national issues. We receive no political party or government funding, and every campaign we run is entirely supported by voluntary donations.

Our team acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we meet and work. We wish to pay respect to Elders - past, present and emerging - and acknowledge the important role all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to play within Australia and the GetUp community.
