GM 2.0: Australian regulators engineering the truth
Genetically Modified? Soon you won’t know – and genetically modified foods won’t be assessed for safety either.
The next generation of Genetic Engineering is now called New Breeding Techniques (NBTs). The biotech industry argues that the result is almost identical to what selective breeding would produce, therefore it shouldn't really be called Genetic Engineering - and consequently not regulated as such.
The joint Australia/New Zealand Food Standards Authority is currently calling for feedback on a review of the Food Standards Code. Submissions close on 12 April 2018.
