Open Letter to Alistair Carmichael
Regardless of faith or ethnicity, the true test of morality is behaviour. Zionism in practise is cruel and inhuman and the daily suffering of the belligerently-occupied Palestinian people is undeniable witness to that horrible reality.
Open Letter to the Rt Hon. Mr Alistair Carmichael, Chief Whip, Liberal Democrats
21 July 2013
Dear Mr Carmichael,
I write in regard to your letter to David Ward suggesting that the language he used referring to Israel/Palestine was “neither proportionate nor precise”. It would seem to most people that it is the Liberal Democrats that are using language and policies that downplay the extent of the human rights abuses carried out by Israel against both its own citizens and Palestinians living under Israeli military occupation. The so-called 'peace talks' that Liberal Democrat policy supports have proved to be nothing more than a cover for the establishment of Israel's facts-on-the-ground pre-conditions and continuing territorial expansion.
The defeat of Nazi Germany brought the horrific Nazi holocaust to an end, along with the ideology that spawned it. However, ideologically-driven human rights abuses continue to this day; it is as though nothing had been learned. Within Israel's recognised borders, for example, the Bedouin face fearful threats of removal from their traditional land, and repeated and wanton destruction of their homes by the Israeli authorities. These injustices, in addition to the oppression suffered by the occupied Palestinian people, are happening right now and they should be accorded due and urgent recognition. The fact that they are not is because of the disproportionate power of the Zionist lobby. That influence needs to be resisted because it enables the Zionist state to violate, with impunity, the provisions of the tragically hard-won Geneva Conventions.
While Zionism's promotion of ethnic and cultural divisions is being protected by great-power politics, Jewish Voice for Peace, along with many other Jewish organisations and individuals, both religious and secular, continue to say “not in my name”. May I suggest you read The General's Son by Miko Peled, a former officer in the Israeli Army? The General's Son is an authentic insight into Zionist ideology. Another Jewish author, Anna Baltzer (Witness in Palestine), has written about her personal experience of the heartless Israeli military occupation. No one, with any humanity in them, could read these irrefutable testimonies and not be moved.
Regardless of faith or ethnicity, the true test of morality is behaviour. Zionism in practise is cruel and inhuman and the daily suffering of the belligerently-occupied Palestinian people is undeniable witness to that horrible reality. It must be brought to an end now and international law provides the means. All that is required is the will.
