what do mean by parihaka style exactly and why are you advocating it? parihaka was stormed by 1600 armed colonial forces, huge numbers of people being sent to forced labour camps, made to live in caves, without trial! 2000 were forced out of the settlement. and it didn't save the land or settlements.

while my feelings for the people of parihaka and their attempts to defend their land are of awe and utmost respect, proposing that people 'do it parihaka sytle' now seems really quite odd and out of context, serving the government who would like it very much actually if we all turned into passive resisters, and made it easier for them to arrest us and obstruct what we want to do.

of course its a nice idea to go about your life thinking that if you've got nothing to hide it doesn't matter how many cameras everyday are following you about. but you don't need secrets to get your hose raided or to be thrown in jail. and i can tell you in my conversations with ex east german people, and also with people politically active now, surveillance ain't a very pretty reality.
working openly in some situations is also a good invitation to get your head beaten to shit by cops/local thugs, what a friend of mine got experience just last week.
of course its important that people are doing political work openly, but its really quite naive this puts anyone in a risk free position.(or even a risk reduced position), in my experience its the opposite, even in sweet little new zealand.

Whoever posted the address of Clark's spouse, I think you should leave family and spouses well alone. Not only is this the same kind of bullying you condemn in others and, moreover, targeted at people who have nothing to do with the issue, but it's also pretty darn stupid in terms of strategy... you'll never get the public on your side if you harrass the families of people you have an issue with. There are better strategies, and certainly more ethical ones. You're just bringing yourself down to their level. You're also casting the Save Happy Valley Coalition in a bad light to the uninformed reader, because I am sure they would not condone harrassment of Clark's spouse. I suggest private home addresses be taken off this forum.

And yes, I am utterly disgusted by the spying. It undermines the very fabric of democracy. Good on Rob Gilchrist for exposing it. It's about time someone was actually held responsible for this.

I heard on national news today that TCIL are distancing their ongoing spy activities from their Solid Energy contract. Instead they are suggesting that they are acting in the public interest since SHV people are so fanatically antisocial.

This bullshit was promptly rebutted by Alan Liefting for SHVC. But its indicative, since if TCIL arnt acting as corporate spy goons, then they presumably are acting from their own political agenda, or as a type of privatised state police. Just like Solid Energy is a State-owned corporation and part of a state-level political agenda.

I think Solid Energy instructed TCIL to ignore Clark & Mallards public directive to desist. But I also think TCIL's squirming for a legal and culturally acceptble rationale for spying reveals how TCIL think of themselves, and in what direction they wish to develop their spying industry.

Hopefully TCIL will do to Elder what the Exclusive Brethren dirty tactics operation did for Brash.

But even if so, TCIL needs to be neutralised and their associations publicly exposed, just like people such as Nicky Hager and others have done for the infrastructure and political arrangements of State spying.

If a new level and type of spying is developing, as a new way of doing politics by other means, people need to know as soon as possible, since an alternative politics is by definition, a deviant practice and therefore vulnerable to the enforcers of normaility and morality.

To put it more bluntly, to do good you need to be bad, but not get caught and not become stigmatised. In a conflict with dominant forces, succesful tactics generally require surprise, because winning through force is not an option. True of business, true of sports, true of war, so why not true when trying to stop Solid Energy?

A- 'Te Whiti invited his 'enermy' in & gave him hospitality. The strength he showed here is what I was trying to look to & yes surveillance ain't a very pretty reality. But it is a reality, the idea was to limit harm by having an open door policy.'

So, I'm from Parihaka. What I have been told and have read is that Te Whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kakahi did invite people to come and hear them speak but they spoke in te reo maori. The pakeha who came and interpreted (often as govt spies) would translate according to their own personal agendas and/or their translating abilities. As you can guess, what the public and the govt then 'heard' was often incorrect.

Also Te Whiti and Tohu Kakahi did not tell the public everything. They had a small group of trusted people whom they discussed their strategy and tactics with and even then they sometimes spoke in riddles.

They weren't stupid.

You cannot play an 'open' struggle when you are a fox against a giant raging lion, but you can still play 'morally'.

People need to stop comparing Solid Energy, the (self-appointed NZ) state and TCIL against SHVC as if it is a fair battle.

The former plays for power and wealth despite the destruction of animals, plants, their habitat and all humans affected by this ecosystem destruction and the ensuing climate change effects.

The latter is trying to stop them for no reward but a little respite from the continuing destruction of all that we love and that sustains us.

So Don Elder got away with his latest spy adventure.... good have government and police support.
