Genetically modified trees cut down near Rotorua

in

Anti-GM protesters have cut down 19 genetically modified pine trees at a research site near Rotorua. The attack happened at some stage over the weekend.

A 1.5 metre hole was found along the fenceline, made of 3.5 metre high electrified wire. The crop destroyers are assumed to have burrowed through that hole before chopping down the trees, almost 1/4 of the 80 trees on the site.

Police found a spade with a "GE Free New Zealand" sticker on it leaning up against the fence. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Rotorua site was the same one protested against in 2005, where four people were arrested, one of whom was also pepper sprayed by Police. That protest was organised by the People's Moratorium Enforcement Agency, who have celebrated the weekend's action.

“The destruction of the GE trees in Rotorua highlights the resistance to genetic engineering in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Because ERMA is not stopping GE material from being released into the environment, the people of Aotearoa have to intervene,” said PMEA spokesperson Felicity Perry.

awesome -- nice work

Re: Genetically modified trees cut down near Rotorua

I feel sorry for you guys, you are just not getting the facts right. Those who cut the trees are criminals and should be treated as such by any decent New Zealander.

Re: Genetically modified trees cut down near Rotorua

fabulous.. about bloody time too. Keep it natural.

Re: Genetically modified trees cut down near Rotorua

bout time those trees got lumbered. Beyond even the GE issue, if those trees were used for commercial use it would spell death for NZ top soil.

Re: Genetically modified trees cut down near Rotorua

What is it with biotech's belief that modifying genomes is worth the effort. The nievty astound me, does the biotechnology industry actually believe they can improve on three billion years of natural selection without creating unforeseen consequences.

GM should be treated with "guilty until proven innocent". Never the other way round.

Re: Genetically modified trees cut down near Rotorua

woohoo!

go the wild green guerillas, keep the b*staards honest and make them take down the trials that aren't being done properly.

GE Free NZ!

Re: Genetically modified trees cut down near Rotorua

now that is what I call activism at its best. most certainly keep up the good work. most "decent new zealanders" know what a crock GMO is, and that thier gutterment is run by biopharmaoilcartels.

Re: Genetically modified trees cut down near Rotorua

"Those who cut the trees are criminals and should be treated as such by any decent New Zealander."

In the coming years no one will care whether or not acts like this were criminal or not. If nothing is done to stop this genetic modification pseudo science, all NZ will have to look forward to is the disaster that awaits it when they finally realise that you should not fuck with the very fabric of the eqolibrium that is often called mother nature. Fuck with it at our peril and that of our descendance.

Re: Genetically modified trees cut down near Rotorua

If those trees are open air planted their pollen is already in the wind and spreading to other trees and animals in the area.

Genetic pollution is forever.

Re: Genetically modified trees cut down near Rotorua

The only safe thing to do now is to burn the whole area. soil, rabbits, spores, people. burn the whole island. that shits just not worth risk.

Re: Genetically modified trees cut down near Rotorua

nz is also the only country to go into bat for monsanto at the un to try to introduce terminator seed technology designed to stop the tradition of saving seeds from one crop, instead plants would be seedless and farmers would need to purchase new batches of seeds from monsanto each season. profit over people. nz govt is corrupt as it acts to protect the interests of biotech multinationals against the people's interests and despite the people's position being firmly against GM crops until proven to be safe.

Re: Genetically modified trees cut down near Rotorua

Our farming family, while pleased to hear of the destruction of the risky GE pine trees at Rotorua (this particular field trial has had ongoing issues regarding inadequate containment), hopes that those involved were very careful to ensure that no transgenic material was spread from the site.

Considering both Forest Research's and ERMA's disregard for the legitimate concerns of those opposing this risky experiment (including highly qualified NZ scientists and foresters) the civil disobedience was not surprising. There is huge opposition to these risky GE trees being in the open environment.

We note that the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) prohibits the use of genetically modified trees, due to the serious risks they present to the environment and our forestry industry.

Part of that threat comes from the dangers of transgenic pollution from GE pine pollen, or horizontal gene transfer which could have unintended adverse impacts on the environment (including harm to NZ soils). Another risk is lowered productivity from toppling and snapping of pines that already are prone to that problem. GE pines could also cost a neighboring forester or property owner their hard won Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. A prestigious global certification body, the FSC only endorses truly sustainable forestry practices, and its position on GE is very clear- “we do not allow genetic engineering of trees.”

The FSC has identified a number of other legitimate scientific concerns about the safety and appropriateness of planting genetically engineered trees including asexual transfer of genes from GMO’s with antibiotic resistance to pathogenetic micro-organisms, increased resistance of target insect pests, reduced adaptability to environmental stresses, increased weediness or invasiveness in GMO trees with new features, and the spread of herbicide resistance genes. These hazards, and the uncertainties about them, are the reason for the prohibition of the use of GMO's in certified forests, stated in the FSC Principles and Criteria.

Ecologists are also horrified at the prospect of a monoculture of GE trees. George McGavin, curator of Entomology at Oxford University Museum, said: “If you replace vast tracts of natural forest with flowerless trees there will be a serious effect on the richness and abundance of insects and birds. We are talking about vast tracts of land covered with plants that do not support animal life as a sterile means of culturing wood tissue. That is a pretty unattractive vision of the future and one I want no part of.”

Even a brief look at the widespread problems caused by GM crops and trees overseas will soon convince that NZ is better off without these risky, unstable GM organisms. They are certainly not welcome here in Northland, where local authorities are taking steps to ensure that GMO land use is kept out of the region in order to protect our economy, environment and the public health.

This gets my nomination for most important event of 2008 so far. Pity about the lame press release from PMEA though.

Re: Genetically modified trees cut down near Rotorua

YEEEEHAAAAAAAAAA~!!!! FUCKIN A!!!!

Re: Genetically modified trees cut down near Rotorua

Luddites’

With out GE humanity is doomed; we are not developing quickly enough let along for the current changes in our environment.

The people who cut the trees down remind me of the religious zealots who never tire of protesting outside of abortion clinics

Re: Genetically modified trees cut down near Rotorua

Yeah, GE Pines are just what this country needs...not.

Re: Genetically modified trees cut down near Rotorua

How does Ge tree research have anything to do with climate change?

It's certainly not going to help solve the problem of huge co2 belching SUV's stuck in the traffic crawl in Auckland!

Creating patented GMO's is not going to solve world hunger, it's going to contribute to it.

And if you think carbon-sink forests are going to be planted using GE trees, you'll find out that farmers just don't pay that much for shelter belts or 'an investment forest' on their land, not in NZ at least.

Re: Genetically modified trees cut down near Rotorua

As an earlier commentary noted:

"...we are not developing quickly enough let along for the current changes in our environment."

exactly... or... whatever...hmmmmm...

Re: Genetically modified trees cut down near Rotorua

yeah fucken yeah! choice. big ups to the toarangatira who did the mahi!
