Report: anti-rainforest logging protest at Harvey Norman Manukau
On Saturday 29 March a dozen activists and supporters from the Indonesia
Human Rights Committee demonstrated in front of the entrance to Harvey Normans' giant furniture store in the Supa Centre, Manukau City.
They were protesting at Harvey Normans' refusal to cease stocking furniture made from rainforest "kwila" from West Papua.
While the street theatre symbolised the devastating impact of the
rainforest destruction and illegal logging on communities in West Papua, Saturday shoppers took our information leaflet and many stopped to chat and learn more about our issue. Following the demonstration, Maire Leadbeater accompanied by a deputation of trees and birds walked through the store to deliver the message to the Manager.
No one attempted to turn us away - could it be that Harvey Normans is beginning to get concerned about its kwila policy? Several other large retailers which scored badly in the Greenpeace 'score card' last month, have
now said they will not stock kwila next summer. Time to keep the pressure
up!
