Reclaim the streets – Auckland

in

K road rocked to the sound of climate change protesters yesterday as cops blocked off the road for a reclaim he streets style party. Around 200 people participated in snow fights, stalls and a people’s assembly with many onlookers interested. Bands played samba and world style music along with a punk band, and people danced across a street normally filled with cars. A people’s assembly and speakers spoke about the disastrous effects of climate change if we do not act now. The participants voted for free and frequent public transport and then voted in favour of a peaceful non violent revolution (they didn’t even give us a chance to vote against this one) The Save Happy Valley Auckland Coalition talked about the importance of stopping coal mining in Aotearoa and a group of public supporters wore “save malcolm’s snails” T – shirts, referring to one of the most active campaigners for SHV in Auckland. After the peoples assembly a car was symbolically smashed up, spray-painted and plants were put inside. Overall the day was moderately successful informing passers by and providing a fun outing for climate activists but the turn out was fairly small.

Werent there two votes for revolution, John?

One from Joe for a tongue in cheek violent one and one from Heather for a peaceful, creative one? Both voted for unaminously!!! also the mike was open to anyone wo wanted to use it so who is this "they" who stopped you from putting forward your own vote? "They" constantly asked for new people to take up the mike!

Re: Reclaim the streets – Auckland

John: "peaceful non violent revolution (they didn’t even give us a chance to vote against this one)"

Anon: "also the mike was open to anyone wo wanted to use it so who is this "they" who stopped you from putting forward your own vote? "They" constantly asked for new people to take up the mike!"

I think you missed what John was saying. He wasn't saying anyone was stopped from bringing anything up. But when Heather did her vote for her peaceful and creative revolution she only asked those in favour. She didn't ask those against or abstensions.

Partipant #156

But didnt Heather do her call for a vote in response to Joe's ca

And although Joe did it tongue in cheek style, it had got a huge nerar unanimous vote with only one guy against (who seemingly voted against everything on principle) and no abstentions. Joe called for votes for, against and abstentions with all the motions he put forward on the day- including for his version of revolution!

The report above is fair enough, but writes out a lot of the hard work Climaction activists did to build the event (not even one mention of the groups name). They are also personally out of pocket by hundreds of dollars for providing the ice, placards, chalk, toys, beachballs, car and hiring sound equipment and yet didnt push their collection or recruitment robotically or evangelically on the day. I'd ask Indy readers to give some practical solidarity to the crew and give some small koha or donation to help them out.

I'd also say that there were more than 200 people passing through K road on the day, but because of the length of theese Reclaim the Streets protests (4 or 5 hours) didnt stay for the whole thing. A whole lot of new people turned up when the punk band played at the end.

Also good to see AUSA return to the streets as well, and Hannah their environmental officer spoke well.
