Lobbying for Lucy Online E-Cards to MPs against Sow Crates
SAFE has just launched a new website for their pig farming campaign:
www.lovepigs.org.nz
On the site you can send SAFE's Lobbying for Lucy e-card online to your Local MP. All you have to do is fill in your name and email address, select your MP from the list, and it auto-emails the card to your MP.
http://www.lovepigs.org.nz/Sign-Ecards/
Example Card:
Dear [MP Name]
I am a member of your constituency and seek your help to protect factory farmed pigs. Please use your influence to ensure that the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) is upheld.
At present thousands of pregnant sows are cruelly confined in stalls and farrowing crates. These cages are so narrow the animals cannot even turn around. Sow stalls and farrowing crates do not allow pigs to express their normal behaviour as is required under the AWA. Only a minority of pig farmers in New Zealand still use sow stalls. The vast majority use alternative systems and have done so for decades. Despite the obligations of the AWA, the Minister of Agriculture, Jim Anderton still has not acted to phase out these illegal confinement systems.
Please urge Mr Anderton to uphold the principles of the AWA and phase out sow stalls and farrowing crates without undue delay. Please let me know what action you intend to take on this matter.
Yours Sincerely,
Your Name
Your Address
Factory-Farmed pigs like Lucy are kept in cruel confinement systems that have been found to breach New Zealand animal welfare legislation. Despite this, the Minister of Agriculture has failed to ban these practices. We now need you to help convince the Minister to do his job and enforce the law to protect pigs like Lucy.
Please help convince the Minister to do his job by enforcing the law to protect animals in New Zealand from cruelty.

What about rescuring the animals been held in prison at the Auckland zoo?
Re: Re: Lobbying for Lucy Online E-Cards to MPs against Sow Crat
off you go then, dont wait for SAFE to do it, do it your self, or are you one of those boring "I make inane comments on Indymedia all day" types. see below for more of this
Re: Re: Re: Lobbying for Lucy Online E-Cards to MPs against Sow
The inane comments posting isn't helpful.
Re: Re: Lobbying for Lucy Online E-Cards to MPs against Sow Crat
SAFE's current focus is on pig farming. However they do campaign on basically all animal rights issues. Go to their website at www.safe.org.nz, in particular go to http://www.safe.org.nz/Campaigns/Circus-and-Zoos/ and you will see they do campaign against zoos.

Re: Lobbying for Lucy Online E-Cards to MPs against Sow Crates
I agree, factory farms, zoos, widelife and marine parks sux because animals are been exploited for profit!
Biodiesel is awful, too, because an animal fat tallow, a by-product from the meat industry, is a potential source of the biodiesel. For more information on it go to: www.metroinfo.org.nz/bio_whatis.html. What do the animal rights activists plan to do about this? I have not heard anything from Safe about this and it is happening in the same city where they have their head office.
Re: Re: Lobbying for Lucy Online E-Cards to MPs against Sow Crat
I don't think Safe will do anything about biofuel. It would be a bad business decision for them to speak out against it because most of the public see biofuel as a good thing. If they did they risk a bad back-lash and a drop in their income from donations and subscriptions. I think that's why they have kept quiet about this and other things.
Re: Re: Lobbying for Lucy Online E-Cards to MPs against Sow Crat
It is surprising that there is not a peep from SAFE about biofuels when their internet site claims them to be NZ largest animal advocate group. My understanding of the vegan/animal rights perspective is that using animal fats from the meat industry is jolly naughty!
Re: Re: Lobbying for Lucy Online E-Cards to MPs against Sow Crat
Hmp, so much for Safe being NZ's most proactive animal advacacy organisation and the voice 4 all animals. Biofuels using animal fats sux big time!!!
Re: Lobbying for Lucy Online E-Cards to MPs against Sow Crates
I would not worry too much on what SAFE says as it is nothing but a fiefdom.
Re: Re: Lobbying for Lucy Online E-Cards to MPs against Sow Crat
I was associated with SAFE a while ago and I had problems with 'em. I came to the conclusion that all what it is is to keep the power elite of the outfit in $$$. And all that it offers is death by dogma and the road to serfdom.
Re: Lobbying for Lucy Online E-Cards to MPs against Sow Crates
What do Safe do to protest against horse racing? Here animals are being exploited for money. Today is Cup Day at Addington Trotting Raceway, Chch - Safe's home city - but no protest march or anything from Safe about it like they do for duck shooting. Is this another business decision from Safe not to upset mainstream society, so not to reduce its revenue? The Melbourne Cup last week would've been a great opportunity for Safe to protest against this animal abuse at TABs but it was wasted.
Re: Re: Lobbying for Lucy Online E-Cards to MPs against Sow Crat
Actually SAFE are opposed to horse racing. And anything else that exploits animals - including bio-fuels if they contain animal products. SAFE is a vegan organization.
Obviously SAFE cannot campaign on all issues all at once as they don't have the resources. If you want SAFE to campaign against a particular issue, then maybe you could get involved and help organize it.
Re: Re: Re: Lobbying for Lucy Online E-Cards to MPs against Sow
If SAFE are against horse racing and biofuels if they use animal products where's the proof? I've done keyword searches looking for these topics on their web-site but found nothing. It might pay for SAFE to add these topics to their web-site and do some articles about them for their next magazine. These are worthwhile issues to investagate and report on.
For "they don't have the resources" argument: people can see if they do or not from their accounting reports on www.companies.govt.nz by searching other registers. Just type in Save Animals From Exploitation and there they are. It's up to individuals to judge this.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Lobbying for Lucy Online E-Cards to MPs against
I've just read Safe's accounting reports and I was very interesting to see that the last accountant put some distance between them and the reports. This should ring alarm bells!!!
Re: Re: Re: Lobbying for Lucy Online E-Cards to MPs against Sow
I have tried to get Safe to campaign against these and other issues but to no avail. They just what to repeat the pig issue that has not met with sucess in the past. All very disappointing!
Re: Lobbying for Lucy Online E-Cards to MPs against Sow Crates
Horse racing at Riccarton today in Christchurch and no Safe protesting against this animal abuse? So sad.
Re: Lobbying for Lucy Online E-Cards to MPs against Sow Crates
It does seem SAFE is a bit slack in Saving Animals from Exploitation. The real losers in all of this are the animals. I hope I see them protesting at the Canterbury AMP Show Day, which happens in SAFE's head office home city.
Re: Lobbying for Lucy Online E-Cards to MPs against Sow Crates
If this isn't enough of a reason http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/thepress/0,2106,3862334a6009,00.html for Safe to be at the A&P Show in Christchurch this weekend then I don't know what is.
It does appear that Safe needs to come down from their Ivy Tower in Armagh Street, Christchurch, to be more proactive in the city where they have their head office in. The only time I've seen them do it is when they fundraise.
If Safe doesn't like the treatment that they have received here, by so many people showing their displeasure with them, then they need to advertise elsewhere.

Re: Re: Re: Lobbying for Lucy Online E-Cards to MPs against Sow
No, the link no longer works as you were too slow. Better luck next time. It was about a bull that got lose and harmed people at the A&P show in Christchurch last week.
Anyhow, no sight of SAFE at this event & Carnival Week last week wasn't used as an opportunity to promote animal rights. What a waste!
