Weapons conference arrests disgraceful and unlawful

#media_6959;left# Peace activists achieved a great victory in Wellington District Court
today as the last remaining charge of those against the 20 people arrested
at last year’s protest against the weapons conference at Te Papa was
dismissed.

The charge of trespass against Peace Action member Nick Henry was
dismissed following an application by police to offer no evidence.

Weapons Conference a Battleground for Protesters (2005) | Te Papa - No Arms Race at Our Place (2004) | PAW: Weapons Conference Disrupted (2003)

“This is a vindication of our position that the Trespass Act can not be
used to prevent protest in a public place” said Nick Henry.

“None of the 20 people arrested were convicted of any charge. The arrests
were simply a means for Te Papa management to remove people who were
lawfully voicing opposition to the Defence Industry Association annual
conference.”

“The hosting of a weapons conference at Our Place is offensive to many New
Zealanders. The National Museum should not be the marketplace for
companies like Lockheed Martin to sell missiles.”

“Members of the Defence Industry Association claimed that no weapons would
be on display yet an army tank and helicopter were showcased at the museum
during the conference.”

Peace Action Wellington has an on-going campaign to stop the annual
conference which is again scheduled to happen at Te Papa in October.

Weapons conference back at Te Papa in 2006

The New Zealand Defence Industry Association (NZDIA) is coming back to Wellington this October. From 16 - 18 October 2006 they will once again hold their annual conference at Te Papa ('Our Place'). Peace Action Wellington has campaigned for a number of years against the New Zealand weapons industry and their conference. Last year, the front entrance of the museum was closed for 4 hours by a human blockade on the opening day of the conference with a large contingent of the 'Revolutionary Clown Army' participating.
Get in on Peace Action - Call to Action!

Peace Action Wellington is having a campaign planning and strategy session on Saturday, May 27 from 1-5pm at the Unite! office, 307 Willis Street. This is an opportunity to talk about our plans, commitments and energy levels for the coming year - and make a strategy for actions and education. This meeting is open to old and new Peace Activists so please come along with ideas to share. A campaign against the NZDIA conference will be discussed and a mobilisation for mid October is looking very likely. We are calling on people to come to Wellington in October from all across the country to participate in the actions against the conference.

Re: Weapons conference arrests disgraceful and unlawful

Re: Weapons conference arrests disgraceful and unlawful

That's fantastic Nick!

Cheers,

Re: Weapons conference arrests disgraceful and unlawful

I was gong to say congrats...but for what? For not being convicted on a ridiculous trumped up charge? It's a crazy mixed up world. However I'm glad this time common sense prevailed. Keep us posted with protest plans etc... I will gladly make a trip down to Welly to protest against these filthy greedy death merchants.

Peace.

GoodCleanFun it's what I'm all about.

Re: Weapons conference arrests disgraceful and unlawful

Good! I'm glad that everyone got off - they should've! Police handling of the situation on the day was atrocious.

Re: Weapons conference arrests disgraceful and unlawful

Solidarity. So the arms traders are coming back? The Te Papa management have rocks in their heads.

Re: Weapons conference arrests disgraceful and unlawful

Solidarity Nick - Glad to hear the charge was dismissed.

Re: Weapons conference arrests disgraceful and unlawful

Big Fucking Deal..........

As long as no one pays any attention to New Plymouth major WMD Factory everything will be right.

fuck you all.

Re: Weapons conference arrests disgraceful and unlawful

SOP these days is for the police to use the 'arrest them for something that they will never be prosecuted for' trick, as a means of breaking up a protest without 'directly' impinging on your rights to protest.

Re: Weapons conference arrests disgraceful and unlawful

It takes real courage in a small country to rally the dissent. Down with state killing! Down with arms trade. Solidarity, Sudbury Canada

Re: Weapons conference arrests disgraceful and unlawful

beat them at their own game. get arrested in numbers so they can't process ya'll and we take the fight to their patch. flood the cop shops from outside and within to converge when they try the tactic of nuissance arrests. fight fire with fire. de-arrest but cause a nuissance too so when they want to arrest one they can't and when they do get one they gotta bring in more cops and get a vanload of bodies when they just want one. keep the upper hand and retain control of the situation ourselves. just an idea

Re: Weapons conference arrests disgraceful and unlawful

It is great you all got off but its not going to stop the same thing happening next time is it? Lots of numbers is a good idea but you'll find most people aren't prepared to de-arrest when the cops get heavy again... Is there a way of holding the police liable for false arrest? Maybe taking them to court like what bobo has done for the pepper spraying (Rotorua GE pine plantation protest) is a possible option?

Re: Weapons conference arrests disgraceful and unlawful

De-arresting is only an option when the protesters outnumber the police, rather than the other way around.

Re: Weapons conference arrests disgraceful and unlawful

It would be good to see you red scumbags getting run over by that LAV. Not so tough then huh?

Re: Weapons conference arrests disgraceful and unlawful

But not so stupid as you.

Re: Weapons conference arrests disgraceful and unlawful

Can someone explain to me what 'de-arresting' is? Cheers.

Re: Weapons conference arrests disgraceful and unlawful

De-arresting means freeing someone who has been arrested by the cops. The goal is to stop the cops from taking the arrested person to jail and to court.

I have heard of a few occasions when this was successful in Aotearoa in recent years: the anti-war protest at the US embassy in Wellington in March 2005 jumps to mind (in Auckland aswell i think) and the anti-fascist demo in Wellington in 2004. I guess de-arresting is only a full success if the person freed doesn't get arrested the next day at their home.
