K Gardens Rescue

We need you to help save the Kensington community gardens from demolition for the Wellington Inner-city Bypass. We are relocating! [ Report ]

Bring spades, wheelbarrows, food and drink to a dig-up and relocation of the garden to a new site just up the road on the corner of Arlington St and Torrens Tce. (There will be a big marquee but bring a tent and sleeping bag if you want to stay Saturday night to protect the plants.)

Workshops and some food and drink will be provided and a small party is planned on Saturday night to thank everyone who has been involved with the Bypass campaign and community gardens for the past 40 years.

See below for programme and more details.

Saturday, 27th August:
(at Kensington Gardens)
11am… rongoa and edible plants talk
12 noon… dig-up and bag plants
6 pm… dinner and party

Sunday, 28th August:
(at Kensington Gardens then new garden)
11 am… preparation to move (final farewell to K Gardens (TBC))
12 noon… procession to new garden
1pm… lunch and permaculture talk
2pm… plant out and mural painting

Kensington Garden is at the top of Victoria Street connecting through to Kensington St in upper Te Aro. (We are negotiating to get the larger immovable trees saved and being involved with the restoration of the garden in 2007. There was not enough 'energy' to save the gardens as they are.)

The new garden is on the corner of Torrens Tce and Arlington St, near the tall Arlington apartments, just up from the top of Cuba St. (It is a designated council park, currently just lawn and a few plants put in by local residents. We are talking to the council but have had no response yet.)

Following activities: 'Seed swap and Tea Party' - 7pm September 1st in the Pioneer Lounge at Cake Shop, 166 Cuba Street. (Celebrate the first day of spring and what would have been the 4th birthday of the Tonks Ave Community Garden. Bring seeds!)

Err. Indymedia is meant to stand for freedom of information and independant expression. Why was my comment about the fact that K gardens are pretty much and eyesore and a place for students to stumble into dunkenly removed. I think it's fair to comment on somthing that even the majority of people who come from you supposed community agree is contra to what you are protesting.... Dammit.

Re: K Gardens Rescue

Hi,
you will find your article still under the article that you posted it at.
here is the link http://indymedia.org.nz/newswire/display/37162/index.php
It doesn't appear that it was THIS article above that you commented on.

I am assuming that this is you, by verifying your emails give comments etc much more validity and makes errors such as this easier to solve.

thanks

Re: K Gardens Rescue

Cheers everyone for a great weekend. It was wicked. The best part for me was seeing the kids, who live around the new site, having such a great time painting, playing soccer, squirting each other with hoses, and being interested in the plants. We will have to organise working bees at the new garden.

It was abit sad at times, having to leave K' gardens, but it feels good not to have left the plants to the bulldozers.

Re: K Gardens Rescue

are they any working bees or whatever planned?

the plants at the new gardens are looking a bit sad and trampeled

Re: K Gardens Rescue

ABA mtg tonight 6pm at usual place.
K gardens are going to have a road put through it unnecessarily in my opinion considering there will be three around it and then one through the heart of it. They are only protecting the pohutukawa so far too and not the other trees we requested to be saved.... anyone want to stop this road madness?!
for those interested in joint council plans - check out the latest transport draft plan (http://www.gw.govt.nz/section106.cfm and email for copy)- it will make you very, very angry! Average of 60% more funding for roading, no funding for cycling and an increase of 21% in CO2 emmissions probably if they get away with it. It's a disgrace. Comments due by sept 30th.

Re: K Gardens Rescue

Well. ITs not our fault. the garden had to go otherwise where would we put the road?
