Activists document cruelty and rescue 20 battery hens

in

Auckland Animal Action received the following communique from anonymous animal rights activists who recently rescued 20 battery hens from appalling conditions:

"Egg Affair is a battery hen farm situated at 62 Barrett Road, Albany, Auckland. We have visited this farm on several occasions, rescuing hens from disturbing conditions and documenting what we have found.

We recently rescued 20 battery hens from this farm and have since placed them into loving homes where they will live out the rest of their natural lives free from exploitation and suffering.

To gain access to these hens we were forced to walk through thigh deep manure, which had collected in huge piles at the ends of the sheds. There were times that our legs would sink so deep into the excrement that we would wonder when our feet would hit solid ground. The smell was almost over powering, the ammonia fumes leaving burns on our lips and nostrils.

After wading our way through this manure, we reached the door of the shed, only to find it locked. However, we could see the hens in confinement in their cages through some wire meshing and were determined to reach them. We proceeded to remove the door from its hinges, then stepped into the building filled with thousands of imprisoned hens.

The shed was pitch black, which made it difficult to remove the hens from their cages but as we did so, we could feel that their thin bony bodies were almost completely devoid of any feathers and this made us even more determined to rescue as many as we could carry. Upon inspection in the light, we could see that the hens had been debeaked and that their skin showing in featherless patches was an angry red colour.

In an earlier visit to Egg Affair, we had obtained extensive daylight video footage clearly showing the appalling conditions prevalent in this farm. The footage shows piled up manure, touching the cage bottoms and hens in near featherless condition obviously suffering from severe psychological and physical stress.

This year alone, over 100 battery hens have been rescued from factory farms around Auckland by animal rights activists who have lost faith in a legal system which allows the immense suffering and exploitation of over 2.8 million battery hens in New Zealand. A large portion of the New Zealand public have expressed their opposition to the battery cage system, however our government continues to consistently ignore the public outcry against this caged cruelty. As long as our laws are unjust, we will continue to rescue hens from intensive battery farms, placing them in homes where they will receive the respect which they deserve as sentient creatures."

After receiving this communique Auckland Animal Action proceeded to do some further research. We found that the Egg Affair was first incorporated as a company in April 2001, but were put into liquidation by the Inland Revenue in October 2003.

EGG AFFAIR (2002) LIMITED was incorporated in June 2002, and EGG AFFAIR 2004 LIMITED was incorporated in September 2004. EGG AFFAIR (2004) LIMITED was struck off just last week on the 15th of July 2005. These all appear to be the same company.

For further information, or for a copy of the video footage and high resolution photographs from the Egg Affair farm, contact AAA spokesperson Deirdre Sims on 021 175 1399.

Re: Activists document cruelty and rescue 20 battery hens

Once again the 'egg industry' is exposed. Out of all the factory farms exposed in the last few years, where are all the ones that the industry premote? The nice clean mainland poultry style 'egg farms' seem to be the exception to the rule. The norm being fucked up crap holes like this.

All you wankers you still eat concentration camp eggs, justify your gross actions (and inaction).

Re: Activists document cruelty and rescue 20 battery hens

Mainland Poultry has that flash, clean, nice looking (if u could really call it that) egg farm in Dunedin which they give all the media guided tours of...its their 'showcase' farm so to speak.

Their other farms are shit holes like all the rest. The Glenbrook battery hen farm horror farm exposed in Feb 2004 was a Mainland farm - where the 8000 hens had been left to starve to death...

Re: Activists document cruelty and rescue 20 battery hens

These photos are truly horrifying and are another example of the lengths humans go to to destroy this planet and the life on it. As conditions like this continue to be widespread, and with the planet on the cusp of ecological collapse any kind of non violent civil disobedience is largely justified in the defense of the planet and the innocent life on it, be it human or otherwise.

Kia kaha to the activists that have made a stand on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves. May this be an example to the rest of us.

Re: Activists document cruelty and rescue 20 battery hens

Re: Activists document cruelty and rescue 20 battery hens

In Europe somewhere, the sex crazed of some people have not met with their immediate partners, but extended beyond same sex to their own children and grand children, as young as six months old.

Re: Activists document cruelty and rescue 20 battery hens

wow that is awesome (hard) work! great (terrible) pictures. New Zealand needs to see pictures like this and its reaffirming to us vegans too-thanxxx heaps!

Re: Activists document cruelty and rescue 20 battery hens

These goddamm white supremacist motherfuckers animal exploitation bitches must be bombed !!

Re: Activists document cruelty and rescue 20 battery hens

We need to see more of these places exposed.

The more battery hen farms are exposed on a consistent basis the better to expell the myth that these 'exposes' are one offs.

Great work guys, hope to see more, bigger and better each time !

Re: Activists document cruelty and rescue 20 battery hens

Darlye Lamont?! Wow, for the first time you are making sense. But "you can bomb the world to pieces, but you can't bomb it into peace". Keep it real.

Re: Activists document cruelty and rescue 20 battery hens

Who cares?

Re: Activists document cruelty and rescue 20 battery hens

Who cares? I do! Well done, AAA!

Re: Activists document cruelty and rescue 20 battery hens

...for exposing this! And well done to those who took the pictures!

How can anyone still buy battery eggs after seeing this?

Re: Activists document cruelty and rescue 20 battery hens

NZ is a peaceful land. UK's racial bigotry was established well before Terrorism. Why should the Brits flee their own making, to here and take our jobs and premier real estate?

Go back and face what you have develop. Take your racists establishments with you. Take your drugs as well and leave our peaceful shore alone.

Re: Activists document cruelty and rescue 20 battery hens

...okay, I really have to stop eating eggs.

Re: Activists document cruelty and rescue 20 battery hens

Eggs are a chicken's period anyway..thats pretty gross.

Animal Rights Activists out to make a profit as to keep themselv

Animal rights is a joke! It is really about making money.

For proof look at the SAFE website. There they advertise their shop on the front page to sell you stuff, so it can make a profit. Also, you can find that each of the elite of SAFE have their own email address.

(Where is the money coming from for all the email addresses and for such a flash website?)

For more proof you can read SAFE's financial reports at www.companies.govt.nz, in the registar. There you find that it has hundreds of thousands of dollars to waste doing nothing to save animals from exploitation but to build a capitalist empire.

After reading all that information I do not know why anyone supports such a blatant money making organization who are only out for themselves and to keep a few in power!

SAFE Animal Activists documents tell all.

No surprise that some think SAFE is not what it is suppose to be - saving animals from exploitation. It is well known to be in charge by some selfish, self-centred and greedy people. The expensive jackets, tee shirts and other clothes with the SAFE logo on them is evidence of that alone that some of the people at SAFE wear.

I have just read SAFE's accounting reports at the www.companies.govt.nz and in the last records SAFE lost about $120,000.00! Why? Is it under poor management or is it been run down by inept individuals?

After reading that I do not know why anyone still pays donations and/or subscriptions to it because they are only throwing good money after bad.

Re: Activists document cruelty and rescue 20 battery hens

Yes, Safe's all about the money and it doesn't even do that well. Nothin' noble with them.

Re: Activists document cruelty and rescue 20 battery hens

SAFE is about selfish self-interest - not enlighten self-interest. Their financial statements and expensive web site is proof of that.

Re: Activists document cruelty and rescue 20 battery hens

Battery farms are wrong

Re: Activists document cruelty and rescue 20 battery hens
