Police suppress media at Anti-Bypass march

in

Over 100 protesters marched through busy Wellington streets at Midday to
challenge the construction of the Te Aro 'Bypass'. The mood of the protest was
buoyant and defiant. As the march approached Tonks Ave, it became louder as
police rapidly moved to obstruct protesters from walking through to Tonks Ave.
As pushing escalated between police and protesters, the police quickly arrested
the media who were closest to action.

A TV3 cameraman and a photographer for the Wellingtonian newspaper were
violently arrested as they recorded the stand-off. The TV3 cameraman was later
charged with Assaulting a Police Officer - who was attempting to confiscate his
camera, while the photographer has been charged with Obstruction. There were
repeated demands made by the police to "stop taking photographs".

The marchers then broke off and ran to a side entrance to Tonks Ave., but
were again greeted by police. A stand-off developed as a number of protesters
challenged the police's right to obstruct access to what they believed was a
public access way. Police assaulted two people as they gathered outside the
Stagecraft Theatre. A man pushed off a 2 metre ledge and a woman was struck
in the stomach.

Although long-serving police liaison officer Paul Berry refused to answer
the protester's questions at the time, as the crowd dispersed he did state that
it was transit land. However, initial legal advice indicates that he was
misleading the activists.

Protestors felt frustrated. Toni McPhail said "it's clear where we stand
now, we're not allowed into the heart of Wellington, and one of the first
examples of European settlement. The Police used unnecessary force, and
escalated the situation."

Te Aro is the first area of European settlement in Wellington city. European
settlers first landed in Petone in 1839, but after flooding and the 1855
earthquake, settlers started migrating towards Te Aro flats. Tonks Ave. is
historically important as it is one of the last examples of early colonial
working life in Wellington.

The connection between Shell and "Bypass" construction company Fulton Hogan
was also raised by marchers. Shell is the majority shareholder with 37% of
shares in the road construction company and their interest in building roads is
obvious. Shell is responsible for serious human rights abuses in several
countries.

The protest ended at Kensington St community gardens with free vegan soup
and bread.

Re: Police suppress media at Anti-Bypass march

Footage of this protest including behind the frontline footage of police treatment of journalists attempting to cover the action can be seen at the Green Party Stop the Wellington Bypass campaign page. Note the file is big. We wanted to get it up as quick as we could so people could see the Police's heavy-handed, confrontational response to this afternoon's protest.

TV coverage (or lack of it)

Although a TV3 cameraman was arrested in a rather brutal manner on the demonstration today, TV3 and TVNZ didn't mention the anti-'bypass' march and the police brutality against media and protesters in the 6pm news.
YAY for having our own independent media center!

Re: Police suppress media at Anti-Bypass march

It was mentioned on Checkpoint and the 6 pm National Radio news bulletin tonight, but not at 7 pm.
I'd say TV3 had to agree not to screen it, as part of the deal to get the charges against their camera person dropped.
Remember that TV execs are the lackeys and cronies of the ruling class.

Or "Jews" for short.

Re: Police suppress media at Anti-Bypass march

yeah, just in case you were wondering about that last comment, I am a nazi shithead. Im also the webgeek for the National Front. I used to get beaten up at school but instead of fighting back I decided to be a grovelly little wanker.
Yeah i hate jews and blame them for everything that goes wrong in my life cos its easier than figuring out what is really happening.

Re: Police suppress media at Anti-Bypass march

Radio New zealand reported at 10pm that the two arrested cameramen have been officially warned and will not face further action.

Wellington police head honcho Marty Grenfell was reported to have said that police recognised the need for media to be able to report, but that police must not be interfered with in their work.

Grenfell's riot squad, the SRG, were deployed in a typically unsubtle operation to supress lawful protest.

"Gerry Brownlee: Does the Minister accept that the serious questions raised by papers released yesterday, coupled with the widespread knowledge that he, Inspector Marty Grenfell, and the Minister’s police adviser, former Superintendent Gerry Cunneen, had their own little Bellamy’s breakfast club, leave serious doubts in the minds of the public that can only be resolved by a full and complete disclosure on his part; or is he simply taking the “Dalziel option” at this point?"

Typical over-reaction by the cops

Re: Police suppress media at Anti-Bypass march

TV1 reported the incident in full on the 6pm News, including lots of really good footage showing the TV3 cameraman being manhandled, his camera shaken then left on the ground, his arms being twisted and four cops putting on the chokehold. Great anti-PR job, fascists-in-blue, we couldn't have smeared you better if we'd arranged it ourselves. :)

Dom Post Coverage

The Dominion Post of the today (11th Dec. 2004) mentions the protest and the arrest on the front page with a picture of the cameraman ("TV man arrested - Bypass protest").

The report with two pictures is on page 3 in bold font. There are two photos: a big one of the scuffle at Tonks Ave and a smaller one of the TV3 cameraman getting arrested.

The article can be found online: http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/dominionpost/0,2106,3124325a6479,00.html

TV ONE coverage

Last night's ONE NEWS coverage is available online. Go to http://tvnz.co.nz/view/news_index_skin/news_index_group
under VIDEO go into the archive and there you should find the video. It shows the arrest of the cameraman and also shows footage from Tuesday's action.

Re: Police suppress media at Anti-Bypass march

Why not next time, why dont you all bring disposeable cameras along with you, there only about 10 or 15 dollars, would sure get the police worried.

Legal right to march up Tonks Ave

Apparently the police didn't want the protestors to march up Tonks Ave "because it is Transit land".

This was against our legal rights - despite whether or not the road belongs to Transit, the land is designated as a State Highway and as such we have the legal right to walk on it. The legal right to march or assemble on a highway is an important right which must not be ignored.

Don't let the cops breach your civil rights!

The situation is different with the actual houses on Tonks, which can legitimately be described as private property.

Re: Police suppress media at Anti-Bypass march

We don't need to bring disposable cameras when digital video cameras will suffice quite nicely. The footage from TVOne news was taken by an independent member of the public. TV3 were given it first but allegedly did a deal with the police in exchange for the poice not laying any charges, TV3 would pull the footage. They were not aware that the footage had also gone to TVNZ, who ran it as lead item.

Re: Police suppress media at Anti-Bypass march

I thought it was very strange that TV3 had no footage of the protest, you think on of their camera men being arrested would be considered a newsworthy item, especially considering that the same night they considered it newsworthy to have an item about their upcoming current affairs show.

Impartial media eh?

Re: Police suppress media at Anti-Bypass march

SRG again, what a bunch of fucktards.
