This afternoon 200-300 people turned out despite the rain for a loud march against the israeli invasion of lebanon and the ongoing conflict in the middle east. The major concern of those assembled was the high civillian death toll this conflict has created which are expected to reach into the thousands, and links between Israel and the US as well as general oversease imperialism in the region.

A large contingent of at least 30 police were prestent to ensure a repeat of previous hostilities did not occur and to document those involved in public dissent. Two police filmed the protest with video cameras continously and one police photographer used a telephoto lense to get pictures of all those who stood out especially those percieved to be "in charge". The filming and taking of pictures seems to be an effort to target and pinpoint trouble makers and seems like a worrying attempt to quash democratic protests. The police themselves did not enjoy having their own photos taken and often tried to avoid showing their faces to the camera.

In an act of creative protest a "die in" was held outside the US embassy with protesters symbolising the hundreds of civillian dead on both sides of this conflict. This was followed by a ritualistic flag burning of Israeli and US flags and speeches by members of the New Zealand and Middle Eastern communities decrying the human cost of the Israeli invasion. It was clear that those their today view the Israeli invasion as unjustifiable agreesion and that peace is unlikely until these wars of agression are stopped.

Their was a feeling of real anger during the protest today, perhaps as many present have a direct link to the middle east. The hardest part of this conflict is the completely avoidable civillian deathtoll and pointlessness of the current conflict. Chants used today included "free free palestine", "free free palestine" and "whose streets? Our streets" Two libertarians turned out to support israel and oppose hezbollah but neither seemed to have a very good grasp of self defence or common libertarian beliefs around weapons. The large turnout despite the weather and the feeling of anger today seemed to differentiate this from the many other anti war marches in the future and a movement building meeting afterwards provide some hope that real change may come from this

Demonstrations are to be held in aotea square every saturday until the end of this conflict.

Re: Report on Protest Against War in Lebanon/Palestine

But anger at the mounting death toll will not bring change. Other popular chants yesterday were 'Down, Down Israel' and 'Victory to Lebanon'. At least these chants say who should win the war.

If we think about it, 'Victory to Lebanon' can only mean 'Victory to Hizbollah' since Hizbollah is the only organised resistance to the Israeli assault. Far from being a terrorist organisation that has provoked this Israeli 'disproportionate' assault, Hizbollah is a resistance movement that came into existance after 1982 to drive the Israelis out of Lebanon in 2000.

Israel has to smash Hizbollah to fulfil its long held plan to divide up Lebanon and render it and Syria compliant to its expansionist ambitions in the region. The 'war on terror' after 9/11 has created the cover for the US occupation of Iraq to grab its oil. Now it provides the cover for Iraq to attack Hizbollah to control Lebanon and secure a new oil pipeline from Turkey to Israel.

While its been done in the name of defeating shiite 'terrorism' sponsored by Iran, according to Michael Chossudovsky, the main motive for Israel's current attack on Lebanon is the need to establish Israeli and imperialist control of Lebanon so that the oil pipeline that runs from Baku on the Caspian sea can be completed from Ceylan in Turkey to Haifa.

This pipeline will ensure that the US and its Middle East gendarme, will get access to central Asian oil without having to go through Russia, Iran or Afghanistan.

Israel's role will be to siphon this oil from the pipeline in Haifa across an existing pipeline to the Red Sea and onship it to Asian markets.

That is why it is only a victory to Hizbollah over the Israeli army, aiding the struggle of the Palestinians, that can defeat the Israeli state. All other solutions that call for peace, based on NATO, UNO etc troops forming a buffer zone in South Lebanon will simply replace the Israeli army with an imperialist one and amount to an attack on Hizbollah and Lebanon's sovereignty.

If people want their anger to be used for change and ultimately for peace and justice in the mideast, then they have an obligation to oppose NZ's military and political support for a buffer zone of imperialist peacekeepers, and back Hizbollah's military defence of Lebanon.

We can do this in various ways. Informing people of the truth behind this war. Mobilising opposition to the NZ ruling class' support imperialist intervention in Lebanon. Giving unconditional support to the right to self-determination of Palestine and Lebanon.

according to scott, dave, you are skipping over hizbollahs horri

is there a difference in opinion? Your clear support for Hizbollah here does not fall for the myths propogated by the Zionists that we read in Scotts piece. Bullshit that Hizbollah fighters deny the holocaust will not help anyone.

Re: Report on Protest Against War in Lebanon/Palestine

Anonalyst asks if there is any difference between what I wrote and Scott wrote on Hizbollah.

Here's a short statement I put up a few days ago.

Anonalyst can see that there is a difference between unconditional support for Hizbollah against Israel in an actual war (military support), and political criticism of its bourgeois leaderships interests and ideology.

In other words we do not make renunciation of holocaust denial on the part of the leadership a condition for our military support, but we do argue for workers and peasants leadership of the struggle on a class base that rejects anti-semitism and opens up the potential for alliances with any Israeli's prepared to go to jail or risk death in opposing the Zionist-fascist state.

----------------------------------
Hizbollah is a powerful militia led by a Shia bourgeois faction. That means that it's objective is to fight for a bourgeois Arab nation, probably a Shia Arab state that includes Syria and even Iraq. Such as state would negotiate with imperialism to establish a share of the Middle East oil wealth at the expense of the Arab masses.

While workers everywhere must be for the victory of Hizbollah against the Zionist state and imperialism, we must also fight for workers control of the struggle, so that not only is the Zionist-Imperialist project for a 'New Middle East' defeated, but that workers and peasants come to power in Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and Iraq, able to defeat Zionism and imperialism, but also the Arab bourgeoisies.

Our goal must be a federation of socialist republics in the Middle East, not a Shia bourgeois republic.
