in

The provisional results of the Hamilton referendum on fluoridation of drinking water are in.

The provisional results of the Hamilton referendum on fluoridation of drinking water have been released and they don't look good for the locals who have been campaigning to end fluoridation. The results, released at midday today when the poll closed were:

For fluoride 23235 (70%)
Against fluoride 10218 (30%)

Total voter turnout = 38%

Caren McConnell of local anti-fluoride campaigners WATCH commented that "Fluoride will continue to pollute Hamiltonians for a bit longer yet... Those of us involved could not have worked harder - the
forces working against us were immense..."

Neither the Waikato District Health Board or the Minstry of Health, the main institutional proponents of fluoridation, have yet issued a public statement.
