Massive RTS in Wellington

in

60 people participated in a Critical Mass/Reclaim the Streets this afternoon in Wellington as part of the May Day Weekend.

Everyone gathered in Civic Square where a few speeches were made and V8 sounds were simulated. The council reception area was occupied for a while and then the RTS started.
Several intersections were occupied. The protest made its way through town going down Courtney Place and into Taranaki st. Two police cars 'joined' in as well.
The party ended in Cuba st which was occupied for an hour with people dancing in the street.
Two people were given warnings by the cops; one for being on the street the other for crossing the street. The unreasonable police behaviour resulted in wild chanting ('No justice, No Peace, Abolish the Police').
Yay for bikes and feet - down with cars!
This was a perfect start for what seems to be an awesome May Day weekend!

photos will be up soon…

Re: Massive RTS in Wellington

hi

On your press release you forgot to mention that RTS stands for Reclaim The Streets, when there is a party in the streets in effects the transportion issues. This explains why the initals RTS also stands for Regional Transport Strategy. The first Reclaim the Streets happened in Camden High Street London on 14 May 1995. Happy Birthday!

Re: Massive RTS in Wellington

Streets have been reclaimed for almost as long as they have been built actually. They are not always called reclaim the streets! Just goes to show that a name really means fuck all the action is were it is at! Fuck yeah i felt inspired by friday, we can take power away from police, from council! fuck them and the heartless system they thrive on!
